Abstract
The recent exponential increase in the adoption of artificial intelligence techniques across a wide range of creative applications raises several fundamental questions for artists, and music creators among them. Are AI techniques just another set of tools in the range of technologies available to composers and performers,or are they threatening to redefine, and eventually supplant human musical creativity?I will consider the full spectrum of musicians' responses to AI,from unchallenged technological determinism on one end to existential anxiety on the other. Faced with yet another exogenous technology that will profoundly affect their work, musicians are in urgent need of understanding AI and conceptualise it as part of an ontology of music that includes both human and non -human actors. In this unfamiliar context,I propose the development of an ethical framework to support and protect human agency and creativity.
