Abstract
The mass cycle is a significant new musical genre emerged in the late Middle Ages, and is closely related to some important elements of music history, such as Catholic rituals, music theory, manuscript culture, and polyphonic practice.Although the study of several extant 14th-century polyphonic mass cycles has been quite in-depth in the field of Western musicology,it is still in its early stages in Chinese context. This paper introduces Messe de Sorbonne from several aspects, such as the history of literature research, manuscripts, musical forms and genre characteristics, and attempts to analyze the nature of the polyphonic mass cycle from the stylistic context of this piece.
