Abstract
Influenced by composers in many other countries,Chinese composers such as XIAO Youmei and HUANG Zi advocated to establish the national music school(国民乐派)by utilizing the rich resource of Chinese folk songs and combining them with Western compositional techniques.Since then, for many decades, the inclusion of folk music into new works became one of the primary means by which Chinese composers defined their music as “Chinese Style."In this article I will briefly explore what motivated composers to search for a national music and analyze excerpts of music works by HE Lüting, MA Sicong, JIANG Wenye, ZHU Jian'er, and JIA Guoping, focusing on the ways they have incorporated folk songs and traditional Chinese musical elements in their music works.
