Abstract

The paper examines three well-preserved sets of Zhou Dynasty chime stones discovered archaeologically. These sets, each consisting of ten pieces, were excavated from the Rui State tombs of Liangdaicun in Hancheng,Shaanxi Province;the Qin State musical instrument pit in Lixian Dabuzishan,Gansu Province;and the Zhou Dynasty tomb of Zhongzhou Daqu in Luoyang,Henan Province.Belonging to the musical and cultural artifacts of the Zhou Dynasty from the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River, these sets of stones exhibit chronological continuity. The author compares three sets of chime stones with the manufacturing standards recorded in the classical writings of Kaogongji Qingshi through analyzing their range of pitch, scales structures, intonation accuracy, and their frequency spectrums, and exploring their commonalities and individual differences.Additionally, the paper discusses shape design, acoustic properties, and manufacturing techniques of the chime stones.
