Abstract
Fengsheng lülü Scroll(《凤笙调律吕卷》)stored in the Library of Kyoto University is one of the oldest sheng(笙)scores passed down to this day. This score was written by the eighth generation descendant Toyohara Toshiaki(豊原利秋)from the Toyohara(豊原)family, who has been specializing in sheng for generations.Through the research of the notation system, including its formation, content, composition of notation characters,Chinese character symbols, and characteristics of beat, this study clarifies the characteristics of notation and the meaning of Chinese character symbols, the rules of the three types of rhythm styles recorded in the score. The notation and music in the Fengsheng lüliü Scroll were originated from China and ultimately formed in Japan, which can be regarded as an integration of Japanese Gagaku(雅楽)scores during the Heian period.
